Bezzera Flow Control Kit for E61: What It Does and How to Fit It

Learn what the Bezzera Flow Control Kit adds to an E61 group and follow a step-by-step fitting process, from preparing the group to your first pressure-paddle adjustment.

Quick answer

The Bezzera Flow Control Kit replaces the standard E61 mushroom with an adjustable valve so you can manually regulate preinfusion and brew pressure. Fit it only if you are comfortable working on a pressurised group, and plan to recalibrate your grinder and routine afterwards.

What the kit changes on an E61 group

On a standard E61 group, water reaches the puck at a fixed rate and pressure set by the machine. The Bezzera kit introduces a needle valve in the group head, controlled by a paddle, so you can slow the initial wetting of the puck and then open the valve to reach full brew pressure.

That control is useful when you want to soften the start of a shot or experiment with declining pressure, but it adds a manual variable to every espresso. If you prefer repeatable one-touch shots, the standard group is simpler and less error-prone.

Before you start: machine and skill checkpoints

The kit is designed for E61 brew groups, not for other group designs. Confirm your machine uses an E61 group and that you have clearance above the group for the paddle to rotate. You will also need to switch off and cool the machine, and release pressure before opening the group.

The kit listing does not specify included tools, torque values or compatibility with every E61 variant, so check the contents against your machine before dismantling anything. If you are unsure about working with pressurised hot water, have the kit fitted by a qualified technician.

Fitting the Bezzera Flow Control Kit: step by step

  1. Switch off, cool and depressurise: Turn the machine off at the mains, let it cool completely, and release pressure from the steam and brew circuits following your machine manual. Place a towel under the group and have a container ready for residual water. Never open the group while the machine is hot or pressurised.
  2. Remove the existing group mushroom: Unscrew the mushroom from the top of the E61 group using the correct spanner or socket. Keep the old part and any seals together so you can refit them if needed. Check the thread and sealing surface for scale or damage before fitting new parts.
  3. Fit the flow-control valve and paddle: Install the kit's valve body and paddle according to the supplied instructions, making sure seals sit correctly and the paddle moves freely through its full range. Do not overtighten the assembly. The paddle should turn smoothly by hand; stiffness or grinding means something is misaligned.
  4. Refill and check for leaks: Refill the boiler, bring the machine up to temperature, and run a few shots of water through the group without coffee. Watch for drips around the new valve and tighten only if a seal is weeping. A small weep that persists after the group is hot should be investigated before brewing coffee.
  5. Establish a baseline shot: With the paddle fully open, pull a shot using your existing recipe and note the flow rate and taste. This gives you a reference point before you start adjusting preinfusion or pressure. Record the paddle position and shot time so you can return to the baseline.
  6. Practise brew pressure paddle adjustment: Start a shot with the paddle partly closed for a slow preinfusion, then open it gradually to reach your normal brew pressure. Change one variable at a time and taste after each adjustment. If shots become sour or bitter, return to the baseline before changing grind or dose.

Product facts

  • Bezzera Flow Control Kit - Durchflussbegrenzer für E61 Brühgruppen: The Bezzera Flow Control Kit is a retrofit set with a flow-control valve for E61 brew groups, intended for manual preinfusion and brew pressure control. It lets you adjust extraction pressure by hand instead of relying on the machine's fixed setting, so you can experiment with preinfusion and pressure profiles.
